  35.      Sulfinpyrazone tablets and capsules should be stored at room temperature
  36. in tightly closed containers.

  38. USES
  39.  
  40.      Sulfinpyrazone is used to treat gout.  It acts by increasing the
  41. elimination of uric acid (the chemical responsible for gout) through the
  42. kidneys.  This medication is also used to prevent further heart attacks in
  43. patients who have had a recent attack by preventing the formation of certain
  44. types of blood clots.

  46. TREATMENT
  47.  
  48.      In order to prevent stomach irritation, you should take sulfinpyrazone
  49. with food, milk, or antacids (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  50.      Sulfinpyrazone does not cure gout, but it will help to control blood
  51. levels of uric acid as long as you continue to take the medication.
  52.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  53. possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose.  In that case, do not
  54. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  55. not double the next dose.

  57. SIDE EFFECTS
  58.  
  59.      Minor.
  60.  
  61.      Nausea, stomach upset, or vomiting.  These side effects should disappear
  62. as you adjust to the medication.
  63.  
  64.      Major.
  65.  
  66.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  67. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  68. back pain; bloody or black, tarry stools; convulsions; diarrhea; difficult or
  69. painful urination; fever; sore throat; skin rash; or unusual bleeding or
  70. bruising.

  72. INTERACTIONS
  73.  
  74.      Sulfinpyrazone interacts with other types of medications:
  75.      1. Aspirin can increase uric acid levels, thereby decreasing the
  76. therapeutic effects of sulfinpyrazone.
  77.      2. Sulfinpyrazone can increase the side effects of sulfonamide
  78. antibiotics, oral antidiabetic medications, oral anticoagulants (blood
  79. thinners, such as warfarin), and nitrofurantoin.
  80.      3. Alcohol, pyrazinamide, and diuretics (water pills) can increase the
  81. blood levels of uric acid, thereby decreasing the effectiveness of
  82. sulfinpyrazone.
  83.      Before starting to take this medication, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR
  84. about any medications you are currently taking, especially any of those listed
  85. above.

  87. WARNINGS
  88.  
  89.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  90. any medications, especially to sulfinpyrazone, oxyphenbutazone, or
  91. phenylbutazone.
  92.      * Before starting to take this drug, tell your doctor if you have ever
  93. had blood disorders, kidney disease, peptic ulcers, or stomach or intestinal
  94. inflammation.
  95.      * Before taking any over-the-counter (nonprescription) medication, check
  96. the label to see if it contains aspirin.  Aspirin can decrease the
  97. effectiveness of sulfinpyrazone.
  98.      * Sulfinpyrazone is not an analgesic (pain reliever) and does not relieve
  99. an acute gout attack.  It is used to prevent future gout attacks.
  100.      * In order to prevent the formation of kidney stones, try to drink at
  101. least eight to 12 glasses of water or fruit juice each day while taking this
  102. medication (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  103.      * Before having surgery or other medical or dental treatment, tell your
  104. doctor or dentist you are taking this drug.  Treatment with sulfinpyrazone is
  105. usually discontinued several days prior to surgery, to prevent bleeding
  106. complications.
  107.      * Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Extensive studies in humans have
  108. not been conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an
  109. infant.
